Executive Policy 9.240 – Graduate Assistant Sick and Bereavement Leave

New sick leave policy

Starting in fall 2022, a new sick leave policy is in place for all GAs in the UH 10-campus system.

GAs with 9-month appointments will now receive up to 63 hours of the designated leave and GAs with 11-month appointments will receive up to 77 hours (GAs with a 0.25 full-time equivalent appointment will be prorated accordingly). Under the new policy, each GA will receive an allotment of sick leave in the Online Leave System at the beginning of each academic semester to use in the event that they become ill. Unused sick leave does not carry over to the following semester.

GAs will also be eligible for three working days of bereavement leave.

This new policy is similar to existing UH employee leave policies and was developed in collaboration with the UH Mānoa Graduate Student Organization (GSO), the Mānoa Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Excellence, the Mānoa Graduate Division, the UH Hilo Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Graduate Council, the Office of Systems Integration, and the UH Office of Human Resources.
