This week’s University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo Pepsi Athletes of the Week are Chloe Domingo from the softball team and Martin Soukal from the men’s tennis team.
The Vulcan softball team is back home from a 15-game road trip. Last weekend the Vulcans wrapped up their trip with an annual appearance at the Tournament of Champions hosted by California State University, Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif.
Domingo went 7-17 in the five-game tournament with two extra-base hits, scoring three times and driving in five RBIs. Three of Domingo’s five RBIs were scored in UH Hilo’s 7-5 win over California State University, San Bernardino. Domingo had the game-tying double (5-5) in the fifth and chipped in the final insurance run in the sixth (7-5).
The UH Hilo men’s tennis team captured a crucial win against No. 4 Hawaiʻi Pacific University (HPU) on April 2. Soukal, the No. 3 ranked player in the nation, set the tone for the Vulcans by winning the first singles match after UH Hilo dropped the doubles point.
Soukal topped HPU’s Jan Pleva 6-1, 6-3 in 49 minutes which tied the match up 1-1 for UH Hilo. Soukal improved to 12-2 from the first court on his senior day.
