The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa’s Office of the Provost has formally initiated the search for the next dean of the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST). The search advisory committee reporting to Provost Michael Bruno has been established to start the search process.

SOEST is globally recognized as a premier institution for research and education in the geosciences. The mission of SOEST is to serve society through uplifting and expanding new knowledge about our oceans, Earth, atmosphere and planets, and enhancing the quality of life in Hawaiʻi, the nation and across the globe, by providing world-class research and education, contributing to a high-tech economy, and promoting the sustainable and resilient use of the environment.

Denise Konan, dean of the College of Social Sciences, will chair the search advisory committee, whose members are as follows:

  • Roşie Alegado, associate professor, Department of Oceanography and UH Sea Grant, Center for Microbial Oceanography: Research and Education, SOEST
  • Brian Allen, graduate student
  • Healani Chang, associate specialist, Pacific Biosciences Research Center, SOEST
  • Elena Dobrica, assistant professor, Hawaiʻi Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, SOEST
  • Dolan Eversole, associate extension agent, UH Sea Grant, SOEST
  • Kealoha Fox, senior advisor, Institute for Climate and Peace
  • Julia Hammer, professor, Department of Earth Sciences, SOEST
  • Mireya Inga, administration and fiscal support specialist, Department of Oceanography, SOEST
  • Margaret McManus, professor and chair, Department of Oceanography, SOEST
  • Thanh Truc Nguyen, specialist, Curriculum Research and Development Group, College of Education
  • Noelani Puniwai, associate professor, Hawaiʻinuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge
  • Mariko Quinn, undergraduate student, ASUH
  • Michael Seki, director, Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, National Marine Fisheries Service, NOAA
  • Godwin Severa, assistant researcher, Hawaiʻi Natural Energy Institute, SOEST

The committee will recommend finalists to Provost Bruno, who will then recommend a selectee to UH President David Lassner.

The search process has started and will continue over the summer (the formal job announcement is forthcoming) with finalists invited to campus in early fall 2022 and anticipated start date for the new dean in early spring 2023.
