Winners of the 34th Annual Leeward District Science and Engineering Fair were announced in March in the Leeward Community College Theatre. More than 130 students from three high schools presented 84 projects at the fair, which was held in February. Projects from Pearl City, Waipahu and Campbell high schools were adjudicated by 83 judges as students displayed their research and answered the judges questions.
The winning students will represent the Leeward district and State of Hawaiʻi at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair in May.
Grand prize winners:
- Winning Team Project: Investigating which natural materials can be used to create an environmentally friendly sanitary pad by Antoinette Consolascion Pinera and Christina Jayne Bayani from Waipahu High School
- Winning Individual Project: Constructing solar asphalt collectors into Waipahu roads by Jeyan Francis Cornelio from Waipahu High School
- Overall third place: Reef protection starts with the right protection by Kuualoha Andrade, Dean Cabato and Riki Nishizawa from Waipahu High School
Proud family and friends were joined by Leeward CC Chancellor Carlos Peñaloza and state lawmakers.
The annual fair is coordinated by Andrea Herndon and Sandro Jube, faculty from Leeward CC’s math and sciences division.
