Two basketball seniors are University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s Pepsi Athletes of the Week following a two-game California road trip.

Kupaʻa Harrison scored 26 points against Azusa Pacific and 24 against Fresno Pacific to earn his fourth Pepsi Athlete of the Week award. In the first game, the Kailua native scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half, which included three consecutive three point attempts. Harrison also ended the game with six rebounds. Against Fresno Pacific, he went 10-of-17 from the field, hauled in seven rebounds and dished out three assists. Harrison currently ranks second in the PacWest in scoring (18.7 points per game), fourth in steals (1.9 per game), fifth in free throw percentage (.795) and sixth in rebounds (6.8 per game).

Kim Schmelz had two solid games on the road in losing causes against Azusa Pacific and Fresno Pacific. The guard put up 18 points against the Cougars on 3-of-6 from beyond the three point line. Then, the Sacramento native contributed 12 points versus the Sunbirds, sinking all eight of her free throw attempts. Schmelz has scored in double figures in seven of her last eight games after missing all of last season and played in only two games in 2017-18 due to a knee injury.

The Vulcans return for a four-game homestand, beginning with a Thursday (January 23) showdown against Concordia. The women’s game begins at 5 p.m. and the men’s game starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
