Isabelle Mejia

Softball pitcher Isabelle Mejia and baseball center fielder Kyle Yamada are the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo‘s Pepsi Athletes of the Week for the first week of March.

Isabelle Mejia

Vulcan pitcher and designated player Mejia had a week to remember as the Vulcans went 7–1 against Notre Dame de Namur and Holy Names. In the pitcher’s circle, she was 4–0 with three shutouts—including a five-inning, no-hitter helping the Vulcans improve to 12–4 this season. Mejia pitched a total of 25 innings and gave up just one run, seven hits and struck out 21 Argonauts and Hawks.

Kyle Yamada

Senior outfielder, Yamada, played a key role as the Vulcans won three out of four games at home against Fresno Pacific, to improve to 5–5 in the Pacific West Conference. He went 7 for 15 over four games to move his average from .306 to .328. On Saturday night, Yamada cleared the bases in the bottom of the ninth with a triple and then scampered home with the winning run on a throwing error, giving the Vulcans a miracle 5–4 win.
