Big scoring numbers in basketball were a common thread for the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo’s Pepsi Athletes of the Week, James Griffin and Allie Navarette.

James Griffin

Griffin helped lead a comeback in a near upset against Point Loma on Saturday. He had a season-high of 25 points, hitting six three-pointers with four in the final three minutes as the UH Hilo Vulcans rallied from a 31-point deficit cutting the margin down to three.

Griffin scored 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds against Concordia and added 22 points and seven boards in a win over Hawaiʻi Pacific. For the week, he scored 65 points, averaging 21.7 per game.

Allie Navarette

Scoring, rebounding and bullseye marksmanship at the free throw line paved the way for Navarette. The sophomore inside player had 26 points against Point Loma, 25 against Concordia and 18 against Hawaiʻi Pacific, racking up 69 points for the week. She had double-doubles against the Eagles (14 rebounds) and Sea Lions (13 boards) for a total of 31 rebounds in three games.

Most impressive was her ability to take advantage of opportunities at the free throw line. Navarette hit 14 of 15 against PLNU, 10 of 10 against Concordia and was 7 of 9 against the Sharks for 91 percent accuracy.
