Two $10,000 Green Project Implementation Awards are up for grabs for student-led sustainability projects with measurable outcomes on UH campus or in the community, while two $5,000 Green Student Leader Awards are available to recognize and support students who take on leadership roles in sustainability related activities on-campus and in their communities.

Nominations and applications are now open— nominate staff or faculty who have demonstrated leadership in sustainability for recognition at the annual Sustainability in Higher Education Summit in spring 2016.

UH graduate and undergraduate students are eligible to apply, and partnerships with staff and faculty members are encouraged. Projects that map to UH Presidents’s Executive Sustainability Policy will receive priority consideration, and administrators and/or facilities and operations staff must approve all project proposals from students in their schools.

The awards are presented with funding from Hawaiian Electric Industries and additional funding support from Johnson Controls, Inc. “We care deeply about Hawaiʻi and achieving an affordable clean energy future for generations to come,” said Alan Oshima, Hawaiian Electric president and CEO. “In supporting the Green Initiatives Awards our goal is to encourage young leaders to take purposeful actions that will increase our state’s resiliency and self-sufficiency, while recognizing sustainability efforts that are making a real impact in our communities.”

“Sustainability is about unleashing our creative innovation to solve the problems created by a rapidly changing world for our communities,” said Matthew Kamakani Lynch, UH System sustainability coordinator. “The President’s GIA was created as a tool to help unleash the creativity that our students have and create pathways for great ideas to emerge, arise and be built upon from anywhere within our institution.”
