The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa College of Engineering held a dedication, blessing and opening ceremony on April 7 for a six-foot-wide and 40-foot-long walkway in the area between the POST and HIG buildings. The project was designed, surveyed, built and installed this semester by 60 civil and environmental engineering UH Mānoa students. They were assisted by UH Mānoa facilities and grounds personnel.

The collaborative effort was a semester-long class project for the CEE 375 Construction Materials students, taught by College of Engineering Professor Amarjit Singh. The project also resulted in the design and planting of a nearby rain garden.

Said Singh, “We are very happy about the collaboration with the building and grounds department, resulting in our students not only receiving a great learning experience, but also adding to the quality of life for our entire campus.”

Added Steve Meder, UH Mānoa interim associate vice chancellor in the Office of Planning and Facilities, “Expanding education beyond the classroom and having students see the potential of their professional training’s effect, in real ways and in the larger world, bring us all back to exactly why we are here. We look forward to other student/worker collaborations in the future.”

Taking part in the untying of the maile lei were Singh, Chancellor Robert Bley-Vroman, College of Engineering Dean Peter Crouch, Director of Buildings and Grounds Management Roxanne Adams and Landscape Manager Jameson Ramelb.

CEE 375 is a civil and environmental engineering class on construction materials. It imparts knowledge on properties of aggregates for concrete, types of cement and properties of concrete, and mixing, handling, placing and curing of concrete, among other topics. The lectures are complemented by laboratory sessions, in which students learn subjects such as sieve analysis of aggregates, absorption and specific gravity of aggregates, measuring fresh properties of concrete, concrete testing and concrete mixing and placing.
