The Lyon Arboretum at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa will feature a wide variety of classes this summer. From yoga to lei making, July is filled with fun activities for the entire family.
July classes
July 12—Rain Gardens for Home Landscapes (9:30–11:30 a.m., $20): Learn how to build a rain garden and contribute to Hawaiʻi’s sustainability. Instructor Jolie Wanger will describe the benefits of creating a rain garden system, the design and installation process and which plants are most effective. Come ready to design, create and mālama our ʻāina! Class size limited, preregistration required.
July 12—Yoga in the Garden (12:20–2:45 p.m., $20 preregistered, $25 on Saturday, if space available): Refresh the mind and body with a beautiful hike through Lyon Arboretum followed by a yoga class in an open-air classroom. Instructor Amanda Painter is a trained Lyon Arboretum guide and yoga instructor at Open Space Yoga and Yoga Hawaiʻi. Meet at 12:30 p.m. in the classroom, bring a yoga mat. Hike begins at 12:45 p.m. Class meets on the second Saturday of each month. Class size is limited, so sign up early.
July 12, 19, and 26— Lei Making and Lei Plants: A three class workshop (9:30–11:30 a.m., $50): Master lei maker Brian Choy will teach this series of classes. The first class will focus on learning the wili method of lei making, the second class on haku with tī and the last class on planting and maintaining a lei garden. Classes are taught as a successive series, enrollment includes all three classes. Students will be provided with a list of floral materials and supplies to bring for the class (no equipment of floral material will be provided).
July 19—Urban Chicks: Raising Backyard Chickens (9–11 a.m., $20): Instructors Meg Lin and Pat Chung have been caring for chickens for several years. Students will learn how to raise and care for chickens, including building or buying a chicken coop, picking new chicks and reaping the benefits of chemical-free fertilizer.
July 26— Orchid and Growing Techniques (9–11 a.m., $20): Instructor Peter Wiggin will review the basics of the orchid family, including some of the fascinating history of orchid culture. The main focus will be on the various cultural practices and orchid growing techniques.
