Rodgers and Hammerstein’s beloved musical Oklahoma! opens November 4 at Kennedy Theatre on the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa campus, and runs for nine performances through November 20.
This is the first Kennedy Theatre musical production in four years.
About Oklahoma!
Oklahoma! opened on Broadway in 1943 and was a box office smash, running for a then unprecedented 2,212 performances. It features enduring classics songs such as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “The Surrey with the Fringe on Top” and “People Will Say We’re in Love.”
The timeless dance numbers were originally created by famed choreographer Agnes DeMille. The musical was made into an Academy award winning film in 1956.
Set in Indian Territory (the future state of Oklahoma) in 1906, the musical tells the story of the budding romance between a spirited farm girl and a headstrong cowboy, rivalry between local farmers and cowboys, and a comic love triangle. The many colorful characters make it a drama–filled, yet humorous love story.
