Moʻokūʻauhau Instructions: Akua

The instructions for the creation of authority records are available in English. However, as language is at the center of our methodology, ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and ʻike Hawaiʻi are necessary to create records and enter the required fields.                                               

As we build capacity within metadata and descriptive work, and in libraries generally, we envision the instructions and processes for record creation and maintenance to be available in both ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi and English.

A note on sources: In creating authority records, it is important to rely on trusted sources. Context is also important, as Ka Wai Hāpai is working to center Indigenous perspectives. Take care in evaluating resources and prefer those that show an understanding of ʻike Hawaiʻi. You will find a list of potential resources for records in the akua domain following the list of field names. This is by no means exhaustive, but a starting point for research, giving a sampling of resources used to create the current terms. 

Inoa | Name(s) (required) 

Provide the name(s) of the akua. Names should be separated by semicolons. 

Hōʻuluʻulu manaʻo (required) 

In ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, provide contextual information about the akua in a narrative format. Use one to two sentences for each of the following sections, if appropriate:

  • General description 
  • Moʻokūʻauhau of the akua 
  • Events and places related to the akua 
  • Kinolau of the akua 

Description (required) 

In English, provide contextual information about the akua, in a narrative format. Use one to two sentences for each of the following sections, if appropriate: 

  • General description 
  • Genealogy of the akua
  • Events and places related to the akua
  • Kinolau of the akua 

ʻŌlelo kuhikuhi 

In ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi, provide any information, related to the use of the term rather than related terms in the vocabulary, and other information on appropriate usage.

Instructions

In English, provide any information related to the use of the term rather than related terms in the vocabulary, and other information on appropriate usage.

Example: Use this term for resources related to the deity Pele whose home is at Kīlauea on the island of Hawaiʻi. Do not use this term for resources relating to volcanoes outside of the Hawaiʻi landscape.

Moʻokūʻauhau | Genealogy

Provide the names of related persons or groups from the Moʻokūʻauhau domain. This includes related akua, hālau, ʻohana, and kanaka. See subfields for specific kinds of terms. 

Subfield: Akua | Deity:

Provide the names of related akua that do not fit into the makua and keiki categories. Names should be separated by semicolons.

Subfield: Makua | Parent: 

Provide the names of the parents of the akua (can be more than two). Names should be separated by semicolons.  

Subfield: Keiki | Child: 

Provide the names of the children of the akua. Names should be separated by semicolons. 

Subfield: Hālau | Group/school: 

Provide the names of the groups (such as hālau) associated with the akua. Names should be separated by semicolons. 

Subfield: ʻOhana | Family:

Provide the names of families associated with the akua. Names should be separated by semicolons. 

Subfield: Kanaka | Person:

Provide the names of people associated with the akua. Names should be separated by semicolons.

ʻĀina | Land/sea: 

Provide the name of any ʻāina associated with the akua, i.e. birthplace, where they live or visited, where they died. Names should be separated by semicolons.

Hana | Practice: 

Provide the names of practices associated with the akua. Names should be separated by semicolons. 

Kinolau | Form:

Provide the bodily form(s) that the akua takes. Names should be separated by semicolons. 

ʻAha | Ceremony: 

Provide the names of ceremonies associated with this akua, Names should be separated by semicolons. 

Hanana | Event: 

Provide the names of phrases for storied or other kupaianaha events, including kaua related to the akua. Names should be separated by semicolons.

Kūmole | Source(s) (required)

Provide the sources for any info entered in record. Include page numbers or direct links to online resources. There should be a line break between each source. 

Mea haku | Created by (required):

Record the name of the person who created the original record.
