Description

Netmaking is the work of creating nets using string or rope. Nets are used for fishing and other practices such as bird catching and the carrying of gourds. There are different types of nets that are used for fishing, such as the throw net and the gill net or set net. The types of fishing that require a net include hukilau, lawaiʻa kōkō, laulele, kāheʻe, kahehae, holoholo, and mōkū. A well known proverb that relays the importance of the net is “I haʻaheo nō ka lawaiʻa i ka lako i ka ʻupena,” meaning, a fisherman can be proud when well supplied with nets, demonstrating that good tools will help the worker succeed.
