Description
Lele kawa, also known as lele ʻopu, is act of diving into the ocean feet first from a very high point without making a splash upon entering the water. The papa lele kawa is the diving board from which the person leaping stands and leaps from. Kahekili, the aliʻi nui of Maui, loved the sport of lele kawa. On Lānaʻi, at the cliff of Kaunolū, there is a place called Kawa Lele o Kahekili honoring Kahekili for diving from the specific point. Kaumaea, Kaʻū is another famed location for diving in this way.
