Notice: Notice: macOS 15 (Sequoia) advisory (Mar 3 8:56 am)

9/19/2024 update:

After updating to macOS 15, users may notice that their wireless passthrough no longer works. This is due to a new feature, MAC Address Rotation, introduced with macOS 15. This feature can be turned off, or alternatively, you can choose to set a "fixed" random MAC Address. If you select "fixed", you will need to add the new fixed Wi-Fi address to the passthrough at https://www.hawaii.edu/wireless/pt/. Instructions on how to set this feature to "Off" or "Fixed" can be found here: https://www.hawaii.edu/askus/1798#macos.

=========================

Apple released macOS 15 (Sequoia) on Monday, September 16, 2024. At this time, ITS recommends against upgrading to macOS 15 (Sequoia).

macOS Sequoia is a major update to the macOS operating system, taking it from version 14 to version 15. As has been experienced with previous major updates, there is a possibility that applications, especially older applications, may not be immediately compatible upon release of Sequoia.

Until Sequoia is released, ITS will not be able to fully test to see which applications are not compatible. This notice will be updated as more information becomes available.

To prevent your macOS from updating to Sequoia automatically, please do the following:

macOS 12:

  1. Go to the Apple menu and select "System Preferences"
  2. Click on the "Software Update" icon
  3. Make sure the box for "Automatically keep my Mac up to date" is unchecked
  4. Click on the "Advanced" button
  5. Uncheck the box for "Install macOS updates"
  6. If desired, also uncheck the box for "Download new updates when available"
  7. Click "OK"
  8. Close the Software Update window

macOS 13 and above:
  1. Go to the Apple menu and select "System Settings"
  2. On the left, click on "General"
  3. On the right, click on "Software Update"
  4. Click on the "i" that's on the same line as "Automatic Updates"
  5. Make sure that "Install macOS updates" is toggled "off"
  6. If desired, also turn off "Download new updates when available"
  7. Click "Done"
  8. Close the Software Update window

ITS generally recommends against immediately upgrading to the latest version of any operating system when it is first released, until compatibility with ITS supported software can be tested.
