On September 21, 2023, the Department of Homeland Security announced the extension and redesignation of TPS for Afghanistan from November 21, 2023 to May 20, 2025.

TPS can be granted when conditions in a country temporarily prevent that country’s nationals from returning safely. Depending on the situation students granted TPS may be granted benefits such as travel authorization or employment authorization.
