How to Join the HIX

The HIX maintains two peering points, one at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa campus and the other at DRFortess’s Data Center near the Honolulu Airport.

Access Methods

Access to the HIX is now limited to Ethernet at either UH Mānoa or at the DRFortress Data Center.

All circuit costs are the responsibility of the network participant.

Other means of access can be arranged on a case by case basis by contacting the University of Hawai‘i ITS at networks@hawaii.edu.

Costs

HIX does not charge to establish a peering with a network participant. As mentioned in the Access Methods above, circuit costs and/or colocation fees at DRFortess are the responsibility of the participant.

HIX Connection Guidelines

The HIX specification outlined in the HIX agreement lists the following general guidelines for connection into the HIX. Please refer to the HIX Agreement for more detail, or contact networks@hawaii.edu if you have any other questions.

  1. HIX membership is open to all Government, Education and Research network providers that are located in the State of Hawai‘i.

  2. HIX only runs BGP-4 as the routing protocol.

  3. All HIX members must have a valid registered AS Number

  4. Routes must originate from within the State of Hawai‘i.

Establishing a Connection

To begin the process of establishing a connection into the HIX, please contact networks@hawaii.edu. The HIX agreement must be signed and returned to UH ITS and the circuit established prior to the connection into the HIX.

A mailing list is maintained by the UH ITS - hix-l@lists.hawaii.edu for discussing HIX related issues. HIX members are encouraged to subscribe by sending an email to listserv@lists.hawaii.edu with an empty subject line and a message containing the command subscribe hix-l and your name:
