Gary Hoachlander

In more than 40 communities throughout California and a growing number of other states, Linked Learning is emerging as one of the most promising approaches for achieving effective school improvement. Linked Learning engages students by making education relevant and rigorous. It brings together strong academics, career-based classroom learning, real-world workplace experience, and personalized student supports. Linked Learning is organized and delivered through themed pathways such as digital media arts, engineering, green energy, health sciences, and law and justice.

Let’s look at what it takes to design and implement systems of high quality Linked Learning pathways and help ensure sustainability and continuous improvement. We’ll also examine findings from a seven-year, longitudinal evaluation of Linked Learning conducted by SRI International.

Gary Hoachlander is President of ConnectEd: The California Center for College and Career. Beginning his career in 1966 as a brakeman for the Western Maryland Railroad, he has devoted most of his professional life to helping young people learn by doing—connecting education to the opportunities, challenges, and many different rewards to be found through work. Widely known for his expertise in career and technical education and many other aspects of elementary, secondary, and postsecondary education, Gary has consulted extensively for the U.S. Department of Education, state departments of education, local school districts, foundations, and a variety of other clients. Gary earned his Bachelor’s degree at Princeton University and holds both a Master’s and Ph.D. degree from the Department of City and Regional Planning, University of California, Berkeley.

2018 Peter Dunn-Rankin Graduate Student Waiver Program
Up to 5 available

The Peter Dunn-Rankin Graduate Student Waiver program is geared to encourage graduate students whose goals are to contribute to educational research in Hawai‘i. Graduate students need not be members of a school or college of education. Students from all disciplines are welcome. Up to five total waivers will be awarded on December 6, 2017 for registration to the 2018 HERA Conference.

Criteria for Graduate Student

* Must be at least a half-time student in good standing at any institution of higher education.
* Student is responsible for own membership fee ($10).
* Must submit a personal statement by 4pm HST, December 1, 2017.
* Be reachable via email on December 6, 2017 for notification of waiver award.
* Accept award by December 11, 2017.
* Become a 2018 member to HERA.
* Can not have been a Dunn-Rankin Graduate Student waiver recipient in the past two years.

Personal Statement Guidelines

Craft a personal statement no more than 500 words and submit the statement to herainfo@hawaii.edu by December 1, 2017. Acceptable formats for the documents are .doc, .rtf, .pdf or pasted into the email. Please address the following two guiding questions in the personal statement:
1. What do you consider the biggest challenges in Hawai‘i's educational system?
2. How do you envision HERA can positively contribute to policy, practice, accountability, assessment, etc. in education?
