University of Hawaiʻi Maui College

The Agriculture and Natural Resources Program at UH Maui college provides science-based instruction and hands-on skills training to work in a wide variety of sustainable “green industry” jobs.  An emphasis on entrepreneurship is included to prepare students to be a vibrant part of Hawaiʻi’s growing kamaʻaina economy.  Degree seeking students, students intending to transfer, as well as those interested in a few targeted courses for professional development are encouraged to be part of the program.

There are three general academic tracks in the program: crop production, landscaping, and resource management.  Students can work toward an Associate in Applied Science in Sustainable Tropical Crop Production or Horticulture and Landscape Maintenance; or work with the Program Coordinator to develop an Associate in Technical Studies in Cultural and Natural Resource Management.  Beginner farmer development training in collaboration with the GoFarm Hawaii program is condensed in a Certificate of professional development.

Length of Program – An Associate’s degree takes 2 years (4 semesters) to complete as a Full-Time student. However, many working students will come on a part time basis and spend more time to earn a degree. A 2-semester set of courses with hands on training prepares students to making the transition to become a farmer in the commercial farming industry. Other specializations such as Beekeeping are offered as Certificates.

UH Maui College – Agriculture and Natural Resources is also the site of the GoFarm Hawaiʻi’s Beginning Farmer Training Program. The four phases of the program are currently offered here -AgCurious, AgExposure, AgSchool, and AgPro.  Students apply and are accepted into a cohort that focuses on commercial crop production. GoFarm Hawaiʻi participants are awarded Certificates of Professional Development.
