Hawaiʻi Community College

Hawaii Community College (HawCC) is located on Hawaii Island with the main campus in East Hawaii (Hilo) and a second smaller campus is in West Hawaii (Kailua-Kona). The College was founded in 1941, primarily to provide career technical education for the sugarcane industry. Today, HawCC continues with its Agricultural legacy by having the Agriculture program that focuses on crop production and the Tropical Ecosystem and Agroforestry Management Program that specializes in (agro-) forestry and natural resource management.  In addition the Hawaiian Studies Program offers several courses in traditional agriculture land management practices that incorporate Hawaiian cultural values.

Dr. Orlo C. Steele

Director of the Tropical Ecosystem and Agroforestry Management Program

Orlo C. Steele is an Associate Professor and the Director of the Tropical Ecosystem and Agroforestry Management Program at Hawai`i Community College where he teaches courses in agriculture, forestry and botany. Dr. Steele earned his BA degree in Botany and Environmental Biology at UC Santa Barbara and both MS and PhD degrees in Botany from UH Mānoa. Before coming to Hawaii CC, Dr. Steele had over 20 years’ experience working with tropical forests and agricultural systems in Central America, Hawaii and the South Pacific. In addition to teaching, he has been involved with many conservation and forestry projects on Hawaii Island, American Samoa, French Polynesia, Southeast Alaska and Fujian Provence China.
