About 50 attendees engaged in various sessions at&nbsp;UH&nbsp;West&nbsp;O\u02bbahu\u2019s Academy for Creative Media building, including in the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lavaflow.info\/createx\">Create(x)&nbsp;<\/a>living laboratory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\" id=\"attachment_201821\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"169\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-2-300x169.jpg?resize=300%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-201821 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/169;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The Create(x) laboratory at UH West    O\u02bbahu<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn all my 30-plus years of&nbsp;NSF&nbsp;[National Science Foundation]-funded research, this is the first time I\u2019ve seen them pay attention to culture, and it\u2019s really great to see,\u201d said&nbsp;UH&nbsp;M\u0101noa Professor Jason Leigh, principal investigator for the workshop. \u201cIf you check out streaming media like Netflix, you\u2019d be amazed, like I am, by how many untold stories and how much talent there is in the world.&nbsp;NSF&nbsp;believes that supporting culture as a key part of the science and technology ecosystem will spark new innovative ideas and create new economic opportunities for the future, and I couldn\u2019t agree more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expected outcomes from the workshop include an outline for equitable and inclusive translational computational media research pathways, conceptual models of innovation spaces that integrate Indigenous knowledge and creative computational media, and a report advising the&nbsp;NSF&nbsp;on research and development investments to empower Indigenous communities nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright is-resized\" id=\"attachment_201822\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"169\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/west-oahu-indigenous-culture-workshop-3-300x169.jpg?resize=300%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"people speaking to audience\" class=\"wp-image-201822 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/169;width:293px;height:auto\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">                Kamuela Enos (left)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Co-principal investigators included Kamuela Enos,&nbsp;UH&nbsp;director of Indigenous innovation, Chris Lee, director Academy for Creative Media-UH&nbsp;System, and Nurit Kirshenbaum, assistant professor at&nbsp;UH&nbsp;Information and Computer Sciences. Envisioning innovation hubs centered on Indigenous knowledge and practices, the&nbsp;Hawai\u02bbi&nbsp;workshop also aimed to foster sustainable and inclusive economic growth and cross-Pacific collaboration through&nbsp;Hawai\u02bbi\u2019s strategic position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe core premise of the Office of Indigenous Knowledge and Innovation (OIKI) is that the ancestral practices of&nbsp;Hawai\u02bbi&nbsp;are bio-centric sciences and technologies that have been innovated for over millennia, and that our communities that hold these practices constitute an emergent ecosystem of innovation,\u201d Enos said. \u201cOur input in this workshop restates this premise, showcases how it is being captured in the Indigenous Data Hub framework developed by&nbsp;OIKI\/LAVA&nbsp;(Laboratory for Advanced Visualization &amp; Applications) staff member and PhD student Kari Noe at the Create(x) lab, and explores with participants how the merging of ancestral sciences and contemporary computational science can be the catalyst for regional economic, cultural and educational opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The two-day workshop was the first of six invitation-only events funded by the&nbsp;NSF&nbsp;through the University of California, Los Angeles, focused on innovation, culture and creativity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Creatives and innovators from around the Pacific gathered at the University of&nbsp;Hawai\u02bbi\u2013West&nbsp;O\u02bbahu&nbsp;in August to examine the role of regional culture in strengthening innovation ecosystems, support continued competitiveness of America\u2019s creative sector and develop new strategies to expand and diversify the country\u2019s&nbsp;STEM&nbsp;workforce.
