The event brought together approximately 30 participants from North America and&nbsp;Hawai\u02bbi,&nbsp;both in person and via Zoom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHawai\u02bbi\u00a0is facing a myriad of water problems from flooding to drought,\u201d said Thomas Giambelluca, director of\u00a0WRRC. \u201cThere are water quality issues, and we have unknown effects of environmental dynamics on our water supply. This is an outstanding group of scientists from Alabama and Canada working in areas across North America addressing problems that are similar in some ways and different in some ways to the issues we face in\u00a0Hawai\u02bbi.\u00a0It is a great opportunity, kind of a unique opportunity for us to share knowledge.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignright\" id=\"attachment_192710\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"169\" width=\"300\" decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.hawaii.edu\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/manoa-wrrc-summit-2-300x169.jpg?resize=300%2C169&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"people sitting around a table\" class=\"wp-image-192710 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 300px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 300\/169;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Summit participants discussing hydrological research needs and opportunities.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each presentation provided a platform for participants to delve into critical water-related topics. The subjects included rainfall runoff in&nbsp;Hawai\u02bbi,&nbsp;estimating rainfall, flooding, coastal flooding, forecasting streamflow and climate adaptation. Following each presentation attendees had the chance to ask questions and engage in discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re coming together with the summit to share what\u2019s going on in each of the institutions and find ways to to have synergy on the ongoing projects, develop ideas for future projects and to better come up with ideas of how to collaborate,\u201d said Steve Burian, professor of hydrology and water resources in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at the University of Alabama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to&nbsp;UH&nbsp;M\u0101noa, the summit included participants from the University of Alabama, University of Calgary and University of Saskatchewan.
