ELI Academic Advising Hold
The ELI may place an academic advising hold on student accounts in order to request that students take certain actions. These actions may include contacting the ELI directly, registering for the ELI Placement Test, or providing more information about possible exemption criteria.
Register Online for the ELI Placement Test
All admitted UH-Mānoa students who have English as a second language are required to register for the ELI, unless exempted. If you do not meet the exemption criteria, then you will have a “registration hold” until you register for the ELIPT. Register online for the ELI placement test here.
About the Placement Test
The ELI Placement Test is designed to measure your ability of academic English in order to accurately help the ELI to determine which ELI classes, if any, will be most helpful for you. The full exam includes five separate tests: one writing test, two listening tests, and two reading tests. Your scores will determine if you are placed into intermediate classes, advanced classes, or are exempted from taking ELI courses.
Preparing for the Test
The best way to prepare for the ELI Placement Test is to be familiar with the different parts of the test, so that you know exactly what to expect. There are no “practice tests” that you can use to study from, but you can read about the structure of the ELI Placement Test here.
