Join us this week for a lunch hour talk by visiting scholar and friend of the Center, Dr. Iati Iati of the University of Otago. Dr. Iati will address issues surrounding the 2008 Land Titles Registration Act passed in Samoa and implications for conflict among customary land owners. See you there!

It’s First Friday! Tonight’s opening pARTy will be kicking off a month of public programs & events that gather artists, communities, and creatives exploring the African Diaspora of Oceania and beyond.  #CPIStudent Serena Michel will be performing a piece of poetry at “In the Black: A Visual Anthology.” Serena will be performing a piece titled “Piel Negra (Black Skin).”

The installation for “In the Black” features works by Nicole Maileen Woo and Mark “Feijao” Milligan II. “In the Black” flips the script on the misconception of African Americans and the African diaspora as “lacking” or “impoverished.” The exhibits aim to refocus the lens on the innate wealth of the African people, offering a narrative that tells the story of the descendants, the answered prayers of ancestors. Attention is given to showing connections between the African and Native Hawaiian culture.
