4. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
He's a excellent and skillful instructor.
I found the experience-oriented learning to be helpful. Also, the WODs, while stressful, are very valuable showing what needs to be learned and getting in that feel for a pressured environment.
I think what I found most helpful was the videos provided at the end of WOD's although my only comment was that some were out of date, not the current technology we used at the time, But they were very helpful.
He was able to answer questions when we were stuck.
He was very good at helping in a way where you got the answer yourself and therefore learned from it.
Getting a map of what to learn or an idea at least in becoming a software engineering
Very nice guy and is very helpful. Very accessible outside of class.
Explains things well and is friendly and helpful in class.
The instructor is very knowledge and is able to help with any questions.
He communicated to the class well both in class and discord. The calendar schedule was really helpful to find due dates as well
The resources available when not in class was very helpful for when I was stuck.
Always willing to help when someone had a question and/or needed help with something.
He is able to help us debug anything wrong with our applications.
He created a discord that allowed students to talk to each other about the course.
The videos the instructor put out to help guide us in the practice was very helpful.
Always available to contact for help. Easy to contact through discord.
The WODS and telling that I can use AI for the writing code in a time limit.
Going to office hours and talking with him when stuck was valuable.
His knowledge in the field and advice he gives.
Quickly available
I found the screencasts most valuable because it walked through the modules, especially the WODS where the solutions were explained.
He gave us lot of example problem to help us better understand
Very knowledgeable on the content and always helps out students in class whenever they bring an issue to him. It was very difficult to fall behind in the class due to this and because of the feeling that there was a guaranteed fallback(whether it be extending deadlines or one-on-one help) supported by the professor.
Open to consultation basically whenever.
Whenever you ask him a question he does his best to give an answer even when he does not know the answer himself.
Videos on website, going over assignment
Thoughtful answers to specific questions
I liked how the instructor gave us multiple resources, such as the screencasts, modules, readings, assignments, and extra practice TA WODS.

I think the final project is a really solid experience to build team building and working on big projects in groups.
The resources available online were very helpful in being successful in this class.

5. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
All good.
The only comment I have is maybe the response time for emails and questions.
Didn't fully teach the concepts.
There are no lectures, it is mostly self taught class, they give you a website, schedule, and modules to work, and that's that
All of it is useful
I am not a fan of the flipped classroom learning as I feel that it is a big time commitment in addition to actually studying/practicing for the class
Nothing, maybe if there was more interaction in the discord questions that could helps since TA's weren't always helpful
Nothing was least valuable as this class provide me with a lot of skills.
Some of the dates and info on the calendar were outdated
The classes felt very independent, you'd come in and do things then that's it.
n/a
Was more so a hands-off class that was akin to self-learning.
A lot of assignments are not very helpful and time consuming. It didn't teach me how to do a lot of things the assignment ask for and I ended up having to google a lot of things.
I hoped that we were given more time to learn the different parts of the course. I feel like there were too many different things to learn and I feel like I haven't truly mastered everything.
Class time wasn't necessarily for teaching but to go through practice examples so learning on my own was more difficult.
The least valuable is the stuff that is not taught in class. Only writing code in the time limit.
The reverse classroom model wasn't the most helpful to my personal learning style, but I know every ICS 314 class is structured that way.
I found the class time to be least valuable, and the homework/experiences to be most helpful.
I found it least helpful that the only thing we did on Wednesdays was the WODS for the first ten weeks.
easy to reach out through discord
Deadlines, especially towards the end of the semester, were difficult to keep track of, possibly because of a reliance on students referring to the website and course calendar regularly. I missed some modules and assignments because I regularly check laulima, which the readings and sometimes assignments were not posted yet, but didn't build the habit to check the course website regularly.
Most of the time, deadlines were brought up in class but there were sometimes where they were not.
Didn't do a lot of actual teaching, per se. I am not a fan of the "flipped" class format, since it clearly lets the teachers become complacent.
There is nothing that I can think of that was least helpful.
N/A
Not enough instruction on tools like Vercel
n/a
There are too many assignments and not enough time to get a fundamental concept down before going to the next core module.
I feel like because we were moving so fast in the beginning I learned a lot but didn’t get to fully understand everything.

7. The instructor is well prepared and organized.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8. Which aspect of the course were most valuable? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
All skills about class.
Experiential learning over purely memorizing concepts was very valuable as I got a feel to what I need to do over just trying to memorize.
The section on HTML and all of its extensions and implementations were very useful. I understand a lot about front end development.
I learned more about Back end but I am not as good
The final project where we got to work in a team formation and work on a actual project.
The modules on the course website that he provided
The use of github and ai taught me a lot.
The online modules
I liked that the assignments had videos to walk you through something if you didn't know how to do it.
The final project I think is the most valuable.
React and Next.js, I believe was the most valuable aspect of the course.
The calendar schedule and the WODs were really helpful
Learning to use up to date applications that would be useful in my future career
Learning about software engineering on back-end and front-end coding.
The experiences where we go through the website building exercises and watch the videos to see how it is done.
The final project provided the most experience in web development.
The professional persona. I now have a resume!
The practice examples with the videos on how to complete (when they were correct) were very helpful in learning.
Review the WOD videos.
The answer walk throughs on practice WODs were helpful for getting stuck.
The experiences and projects.
I was able to learn how to create an application using Next.js and connect it to a database to read from and write to.
active learning
WODs. The in-class WODs and take-home WODs (some assignments) I found to be really enjoyable and helpful towards my learning. It helped in gamifying homework.
The topics were all useful as an intro.
The most valuable aspect was having a class discord server where we are free to ask each other, the professors, and the teacher assistants.
Learning about new languages
Designing better websites than I have ever designed
Learning how to build websites from backend and frontend and learning Typescript & Javascript.
teaching a new software engineering tech stack
Team building and group work in practical implications.

9. Which aspect of the course were least valuable? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
All good.
I think since this course is no longer a WI the essays were pretty redundant.
Some of the videos to finish the assignments. They were outdated.
I feel like writing the essays was generally a waste of time as it did not add to my learning nor did it make me truly reflect on anything.
Being in class, a lot of it is being self taught
Some of the provided videos were a bit dated and didn't fully apply to our current learning standards/goals
Too many experiences I feel, but either way I understand their importance.
Maybe HTML and CSS cause that part was awful.
Some of the due dates and information on the calendar were outdated
Some assignments felt like they were just there not the most helpful to the course
n/a
Coming to class is not always needed since much of the content is learned during your own time.
The crash course into TypeScript and JavaScript. It took too long and a quick video going over the concept would have been more efficient.
Class time could have been spent learning and practicing more. Other than the WODs, I don't feel like we did much on other days.
We did not learn in class and were forced to learn everything on our own before class to avoid falling behind.
The least valuable aspect is the going over the WOD material before the WOD time limit starts.
Part of the course were outdated with the old tech stack they used which caused confusion on the reverse classroom part of the course.
The class time experiences.
I think every aspect of this course was valuable because I am able to work on my own projects using what I learned. For example, I feel more comfortable using plain HTML and React and Bootstrap.
providing solution
I think the essays were the least valuable aspect of the course. I believe if the class had its old format where it met the qualifications of a WI the essays would be more valuable. But, because there isn't enough ICS faculty to meet those requirements, the essays felt the most like a chore to me.
I do appreciate the "write for the world, not for the professor/grade" motive, but compared to other WI classes I've taken, the essays felt like they could be cheated much easier (the length of the essays were shorter and there wasn't a need to find references).
We needed much more in-depth practice with React and Next.js to actually build applications.
The least valuable were how some of the modules on the website were outdated which made some assignments a bit confusing.
N/A
Some of the things I was unable to figure out at the end of semester
teaching a software engineering tech stack and less so software engineering concepts and system design
Class structure is kind of lazy because we don't actually learn in class, we just do assignments that are already posted online. This class could be async.

The screencast was also really helpful
For the course website, it would be great if the instructions/materials were kept up to date for the current semester because it seems that some of the instructions came from the previous ICS 314 courses. Some of the materials/software listed in the assignments don't get used and it confuses all, if not, most students when they work on assignments. That also goes for any guide through videos because some of those tend to also show materials/software that students haven't been properly introduced to.

I want this class to be a Writing Intensive since we write many essays.

A dictionary of all key components for syntax in each framework would be helpful and maybe a "synonym" or comparison so you can compare similar features but with different framework specific syntax.
