2. Considering everything, how would you rate the GA/TA’s sections of this COURSE?
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
3. Considering everything, how would you rate the LAB for this course?
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
4. What did you find most valuable and helpful about the instructor? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Whenever we have issues with our code, he comes by and help.
NA
Very Informed about the subject and taught of things to help outside of the class, I.e. Linkdin, Github Profile
Always helps, even outside of his listed office hours.
He was able to talk about his experience in the field.
Learning how to use JSFiddle, GitHub, IntelliJ, React, and Meteor.
Instructor was very straightforward and helpful in a manner that doesn't provide the answer outright, but easily leads you to the river. Knowledgeable, so felt reliable the entire time.
Very straightforward with teaching software engineering and web development.
Insightful solutions to assignments
The videos attached to the homework assignments. When I was unable to figure out the assignment, I would often refer to the videos
Always available to message
the homework videos.
the videos that were posted with the practice WODS to walk us through the problem
I found the recorded lectures very helpful in terms of assignments and stuff
Although he is loud, he is pretty approachable and straightforward. It makes communicating with him easy.
Very simple and clear. Tells you what to do and what you need to do in order to perform well.
How open he was to offering help to students in class
Has in depth knowledge about the topic, able to answer any question given and provide context.
Willing to answer questions and patient. Also lowkey funny.
provided us a lot of information related to a topic
Ability to explain complex topics with good examples
Freedom to learn on our own rather than listening to long lectures.
The Discord server the instructors created for ease of access to instructors, TAs and other students.
The most helpful aspect of the instructor was that he was always able to answer any questions we had and was usually online if we needed more help out of class.
More hands off approach for self-learning.
This course was very thorough of the material through many videos
Professor Moore knows his stuff. As a student it is often difficult to express issues, having an instructor who encourages the development of SMART questions and is understanding that the process of learning takes errors made it feel less intimidating to address our issues, which allows room for error followed by constructive criticism and growth in learning.
When the instructors provided us example source code to assignments so we could view and see how certain problems were solved.
He was available frequently for us to ask questions as the classes were setup around in class practice wods
The most valuable and helpful about the instructor is that he answer all the questions I have regarding the course or even assignment.

5. What did you find least valuable and helpful about the instructor? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Can't think of anything.
A
WODS. To time constraint and takes out a lot of your grade for a 100 or nothing. If a small mistake or if you are a slow worker you get NOTHING
Nothing really
TAs
Instructor is naturally reserved, thus gives off a hard-to-approach vibe (but is actually quite approachable and affable!)
It was a very time pacing class and I enjoyed that there was always something to get done.
lectures were mainly individual work with minimal instructor involvement
After the WODs we went over the solutions right after but since we aren't provided with the solution after its hard to redo the WOD without verifying its correct.
No comment
nothing really.
the course is mostly student taught, it's mostly up to the student to learn the material
I found the assignments with no lecture recordings least valuable, because it requires almost hours of looking up online how to do things
He is pretty hands-off, and thus sometimes things can be a little too vague if you do not ask a 2nd time.
Didn't post solutions to practice wods, we just glance at them. I wish he posted them somewhere for later access.
N/A, very helpful and upfront and comprehensive with time requirements and difficulty of the course to help us succeed.
Nothing much, Moore will explain anything as long as you ask.
did not give us an answer, coding script for reviews as for WOD or practice activities
but he showed us at a time
Na
In-class team-based activities.
Can't really think of anything.

I have not experienced any reason to determine that there would be something to be found as "least valuable" about our instructor.
It has nothing to do with the instructors but rather the course structure and how we have to do almost all of the learning on our own watching videos and hardly any lecturing during class. This is just a preference and not a complaint/knock at the professors. I do understand how this format can be very efficient and helpful, it's just not exactly my style.
I would have appreciated more direct feedback/guidance.

7. The instructor is well prepared and organized.
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
8. Which aspect of the course were most valuable? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mostly the WODS, in-class, take-home, and the TA practice WODS.
Most things of the class
Project and wods
The availability of all the content online and a predetermined schedule site that is easily accessible.
GitHub, IntelliJ, Meteor, React
The screencasts were very helpful to see a working example in real-time.
The Discord server was a great way to facilitate communication in the class in an organized fashion, as well as to bring students both from across sections and within the same section together.
Learning Javascript was very valuable for front end programming languages.
The WOD's
The WOD's because they tested our knowledge in a timed manner.
The course homepage had all the resources I needed
the group work.
the WODS which train quick thinking and really test whether the student learned anything or not
the lectures
The fact everything is online and thus easy to return to and read is useful and makes the course quite accessible. In fact, the entire website is pretty good for a course website, among the best I have seen for a class.
Creating webpages, team collaboration, athletic programming, and most valuable (at least for me), developing a professional portfolio.
The portion on creating your own website in a group as a project
Working in teams on a final project similar to what actual software engineers do in the industry. Learning industry practices and standards.
Learning new technologies like Meteor and React to make applications.
easy to access the materials via webpage
Making a professional portfolio, learning how to use GitHub as a team
Applicability to the real world, with concepts being less theoretical and more practical.
We learned what was in demand right now, such as JavaScript, React, Bootstrap and Meteor.
The explanations and demonstrations of what we could do and how to do it when learning new things.
Self-learning
All material can be found on videos
The consistency of work (although at times daunting and heavy) was enough to keep me motivated and engaged throughout the semester. At times it would be overwhelming, yet it was better than feeling like there would be too much time between learning.
All the resources provided to us.
The various languages we would learn and experience we would gain by creating our own project.
The group project since we take a dive on the different points of view when we colab with one another.

9. Which aspect of the course were least valuable? |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Probably eslint or testcafe. They are very valuable but not as valuable as learning meteor or bootstrap.
WODS. To time constraint as said above. Should not be a 100 or nothing.
Most of the course was valuable.
None.
Nothing in the course was without value.
The weekly quizzes.
I enjoyed all the course content
The professional portfolio essay felt the least valuable
Course load was very, very heavy
times in class when we kinda sat around doing nothing or when classmates weren't in class for classwork. (very few)
How strict they were sometimes with the grading. I finished a WOD but I hit save for later instead of submit, which gave me proof that I submitted it before the time limit, but I talked to the TA and she refused to grade me even a portion of the amount of points on that WOD.
There is a LOT of material, and at times it does not feel fully necessary to read all of it. There is no true incentive to go through everything, and so I often did not.
Some experiences were heavily outdated and sometimes did not match with the content at all. In other cases where the experiences were up-to-date, there were some that I found had a lack of clarity in the instructions.
The part where we did freecodecamp.com exercises. It's essentially us paying tuition money to teach ourselves.
N/A
Reverse classroom screencasts, as some are outdated where they do not have the correct solution anymore (but still have something similar).
videos were kind old, some of them were useless for hws
The video lectures
Outdated videos.
I feel like the WODs can be a bit brutal sometimes. I think partial credit should be given out depending on the difficulty of the WOD.
The sometimes many overlapping assignments and readings we were expected to do, especially considering other time-consuming classes.

honestly, at times the WODS gave me so much anxiety that I felt it began to become counterintuitive to my learning experience. They are a large part of our grade, and getting a DNF felt discouraging. However, I am thankful that there were many extra credit opportunities to improve my grade.
Everything I would say was valuable, hard to say what was the least.

I appreciated the strong structure and methodology of the course. I also admired the instructors' response to issues, questions and other unanticipated circumstances during the course, offering changes to the schedule or surveys to garner timely feedback.

the TA was really kind in answering questions on the discord and one thing I hated was if you had a question about something you had to ask the whole class about it in the #smartquestions server in discord. Sometime I would ask questions and it wouldn't get any attention in the group chat so I would ask the professsor through direct message on discord and he still wouldn't answer my question but ask me why I didn't ask in the group chat. I still got it done regardless but it takes way too much time when it could've been answered briefly.
Very useful class

The professors showed a level of enthusiasm that made the class feel more lively and fun despite the difficulty of the class. The constant communication through Discord tremendously helped me personally.
The class was fun before I started to get swamped with other coursework.
Awesome class, instructor, and TA.

I understand the pace of the course is intended to teach us the most important aspects and utilities of software engineering. However, at times I could not fully absorb the information before moving on to the next subject. My concern in that is often the information would live on the surface level of my mind just to survive the content knowing I would have to move forward within a day or two. Perhaps a little more time between certain lessons would be more beneficial.
