2.   My overall evaluation of this course is...
The overall course talks about the history of how the LGBTQIA+ community is represented in the media, and the history and tribulations that the community had to go through due to the heteronormative ways society has enforced into... society.
Well thought out and put together, full of engaging material. Also, it has a very high level of class participation in small and large groups, which isn't always the case for online-only classes.
I thought that this course gave me more knowledge on the LGBTQIA+ culture and community that I did not know about prior to this course. The information learned was good but some of the readings sometimes felt unneccessary or unrelated to the course.
I feel the course was very learnable. the materials were easily accessible, the work load wasn't overwhelming and had fun alternatives also. Prof. Compoc does a good job with teaching the material at hand. but I do feel like the class was hard for students to really voice opinions, express ourselves, and be confident in our work due to the feelings of being shut down or being wrong in the course.
The course lived up to the previously mentioned expectations that were listed within the syllabus. Overall, I would rate this course as average since there is a lot of room for improvement but that the course content itself was meaningful and helped me learn more about the LGBT+ community in relation to U.S. pop culture.
For this course overall, I enjoyed this class mainly for it's small group interactions. I enjoyed talking with my classmates about the readings assigned for the day and getting into deep conversations about the overall message and what should the person presenting should focus on.
The class is a good class, if you want your information on anything LGBT related. The work was helpful, however the professor seemed to be a little closed minded and perhaps a bit too passionate, overlooking some of the student's works. The professor seemed very hypercritical if a student's work isn't what the professor wanted, and student's minds and words had to be forcefully changed around without communicating it first.
Overall, I found this course to be really interesting and engaging!
This course is was very informative as someone who isn't familiar with the course material. Educating people on this type of history is very important and helps students become more educated on a subject that they might not understand. The films and literature that were assigned in this course were very good and helped me understand what was being taught in this class.
While initially the first weeks of course included good information relevant to the topic of the course, the subjects within the course moved away from the topic. Some of the subjects took a lot of understanding or reading to find any relevance to the LGB focus. It was somewhat informative in certain subject and interesting in others, but overall was a course that I learned very little to help in the real world.
I enjoyed learning about the history of the LGBTQIA+ community. I feel like I have a better understanding and I am able to have more conversations about certain topics. I also feel that this class has helped me grow as a person. I am now more aware of traumas, offensive terms, how disgusting the media has been for over a century, and how to help the community. However, I do feel that there were times where people felt uncomfortable because they were not allowed to have an opposing opinion. I have noticed a few times where people would try to speak up or say that they disagreed with something and were immediately shut down. I understand that the professor was very passionate about the topic, but it made a lot of people uncomfortable and scared to speak up. That is why a majority of the class was silent throughout the big group discussions. We felt more comfortable in a smaller setting, without the professor, because we were constantly afraid to say something offensive or homophobic. Yes, we wanted to learn how to fix it and not sound ignorant, but the environment just felt off and made many of us uncomfortable. This was something many of us spoke on in smaller groups without the professor.
5/10 if we're rating the course on a scale of 1-10.

3.   If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
This course really enhanced my understanding of the community, and it really helped me learn of new ways to tell stories due to the load of knowledge given to me throughout the semester.
Not a requirement.
I was required to take this course. I think that this definitely enhanced my personal development in the sense of if I ever have to create or write about something related to the LGBTQIA+ community, I feel that I would have a good sense of background.
I needed this course as an elective. I took this course more for my own knowledge rather than for requirements.
Deepen my knowledge of queer history in the U.S.
This course was taken to fulfill a major requirement. The analyzing aspect of this course helped enhance my professional development in my major since I usually end up using my analyzing skills within other areas of my major.
I don't think anything has changed besides having new knowledge on what LGBT history is and some other topics.
I think that this was good information to have, but as a Creative Media major, I didn't really see this as "necessary" for my degree. However, learning about the queer community and their history is prevalent to know.
Taking this class was necessary for me to graduate. It also helped me understand a community and culture that I wasn't familiar with.
I learned about certain subjects a bit more, such as cinema in LGB focus, etc. However, there really wasn't a lot of talk on history so much as "abuse" of LGB people. A lot was discussed about sex, it was not necessary or really relevant to the topic. We barely talked on history of LGB culture through the 60's 70's and on. We should have taken more time to learn about what occurred in that period as it defines todays culture. Disappointing as a student. The professor was engaging and excited to share with us.
In terms of personal development, I learned to be more cautious of the things I say because people can take things out of context and assume I am being homophobic. Even if I was just restating something someone had said, I learned to be very careful with my wording. I never want to offend anyone, and this was a good class for growth.
I learned more about topics that I didn't know about. We dived deeper into history that is important for people to know. It was informative which I liked because it educated me on things I never knew about before.

4.   I would rate the overall effectiveness of the instructor: F=Inferior; D=Poor; C=Average; B=Good; A=Superior.

5.   How much time did you spend during a typical week working on assignments, readings, chats, emails, etc. for this course?

Mean N-Size Std Dev   0 to 2.9 hours (1)  3 to 6.9 hours (2)  7 to 10.9 hours (3)  11 to 14.9 hours (4)  15+ hours (5)

6.   Please comment on the activities or resources that could be added to this course to improve your learning.
An activity that could be added would be to write a short story so it would help students learn how to properly represent the community with respect and merit.
Some LGBTQIA+ Instagram accounts to follow might be a good addition.
I believe that more documentaries or videos could be added to improve learning because for me, watching something captures my attention more than reading. However, the readings used in the course were mostly interesting, especially some of the scripts.
have more interacting group discussions sometimes rather than having the same routine of small groups to discuss homework and then into large groups every class.
Personally, I would prefer it if there were more interactive components to the course such as implementing activities like playing a free video game that is related to the course content and analyzing that.
I feel like in terms of content, that this course has plently of activities or resources and therefor, I feel like nothing more can be added in.
I've enjoyed the breakout rooms aspect of this class, and I believe it should continue. As for other activities, the classwork seems to be good enough I believe.
I would have really liked a breakdown of CMOS citations early on in the semester. I felt very confused about them, but they were never really explained in depth despite her commenting on them being wrong throughout the semester. We got an in-depth video at the end of the semester. I wish we had the resource sooner!
All the assigned coursework was great!
More focus on history of the LGB community, their history through the 20th century and this century, and on the accomplishments. Please focus less on anti-Christian, Colonialism destroying blah blah blah, and general disagreeing with the LGB community. It is ok if we are not ok with the "terminology", some of the terminology introduced in the course is interesting to learn but not necessary in everyday life. I was forced to change terms I use to something I would never use so as to suit the course. Seems to be around colleges we use the terms, not outside it.
I would say have more small group time and less big group discussions. It is very nerve wracking for many people because they are afraid to say something offensive. It is much easier to have an open discussion with a couple of our peers than the whole class and the professor. Since the professor is biased on the topic, there really is no room for us to feel comfortable with opening up about an opposing opinion. It is like a damned if you do and damned if you don't situation. So, that is why we enjoyed the small groups. We felt a lot more comfortable sharing our thoughts and feelings without feeling like we're being judged or told that we are wrong for having an opinion.

17.   Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
I would say, from what I've heard from other students, that maybe the instructor could respect other student's opposing opinions as they feel that their opinions are being shut down and being labeled as "wrong."
No suggestions.
Everything seemed good to me.
I think what would help the most is if we the students could voice our opinions more in class without being worried about being cut off.
No suggestions at the moment!
I feel like the schedule can get a bit crazy at times with the amount of content that is being thrown at us. Sometimes we would have this massive article or readings that we would have to read but only have a day or two to be able to fully understand it and write a near 600+ word summary and relfection on it. I think if she would alcate the shorter assigments for the weekday work, I think it would be perfect overall.
When stating the rules of class to be "everyone can freely speak their mind and shouldn't be afraid", I think that rule quickly fell apart on the professor's behalf. Many people would not want to talk about their opinions or mind because they knew the teacher would basically shut them down or over talk on them.
I wish there was more information about CMOS citations and major assignment instructions. Personally, I felt that there could have been more information available for these types of things. Perhaps having the assignment rubric sooner than peer review day would help!
The professor was very passionate about the subject being taught. This is a great thing but sometimes it was bad for the class and caused a rift between students and teacher. When it comes to teaching style there were times where the professors bias was a bit too strong and it sometimes felt like a student would be attacked for disagreeing with the professor. The professor would take a hard stance without being understanding of the students opinion. A solution to this would be to maybe take a hard stance but at the same time try to understand that every student might not think the way the professor does. Having different opinions is okay and should be supported/encouraged in a classroom environment.
Listen more, speak less. I heard so much from the professor who had a lot of good speaking and had an enthusiasm and desire to share what she knew. This is a good trait. However, I heard a few sentences about the days subject from a student before the professor jumped in. It was frustrating at first, but it was predictable enough that you didn't need to say much when it was your turn to speak. Also, when speaking on a subject and asking the class a question, follow through and ask a student or encourage us to speak up. Many of us in small groups expressed a fear of speaking up and volunteering information due to the way a student was openly corrected in course. It was not conducive to an open discussion environment the way discussed in the first week of course.
I understand this is a personal and emotional topic for the professor, but I would say not to be as harsh on people who are not part of the community and are trying to learn. We are here to learn new information and understand where people are coming from. Based on observations, I highly suggest instead of making others feel uncomfortable, try be a little more understanding of their point of view. I feel like Christians were generalized and stereotyped a lot in this course. I understand where the professor is coming from, and she has every right to feel the way she does. However, I did not think that it was right for her to shut a fellow classmate down that tried to defend her religion (Catholics and Christians being two separate things, different extremes in both religions, etc.). Just from an outsiders point of view, it felt like you were telling that person that they were wrong. Another incident was when someone disagreed with an article statement. They spoke up and said they don't agree with what was said because it felt like too far of a stretch, and they were immediately shut down. Discussion time should be a safe and open space for everyone to speak. Everyone has a right to an opinion. Rather than telling someone they are wrong or they're homophobic, educate them a little nicer. For that person, you are only giving them more reasons not to like the community. You are pushing them away and making them not want to be apart of the community (an ally) rather than drawing them in (kind of like you said about the church).
Although she is passionate about teaching, she is VERY biased. This of course affects how she teaches the class. She pressures students to speak up and participate but tends to form her requests as a question. And not in a good way. I understand that she is a part of the LGBTQIA+ community and that she is really involved and connected to these topics but it's very overwhelming for students. She also edits student work and calls out people in front of the entire class to tell them what they should say instead of what was said. This can be really embarrassing and make people feel ashamed to even speak up and voice their thoughts and opinions. This is because we don't wanna be "cancelled". Topics like these are things younger generations tiptoe around, so to be put on the spot like that is extremely uncomfortable. I get how from her point of view it can be educating though. Personally, I had a negative experience with her where I felt almost targeted and attacked. I won't be going into detail about this because if I do, I'm afraid I won't remain anonymous. Overall, I wouldn't take one of her classes again because she doesn't create an environment that feels safe. And I'm not saying that she's doing it on purpose, it's just how she is.

18.   My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
Really great, energetic, and has a vast knowledge of the subject matter, helping to make lessons engaging and enthralling to listen to and learn about.
Very committed to the issues of social justice and the ways in which LGBTQIA+ issues and representation have been portrayed during the 20th and early 21st centuries. She is able to get students engaged in the material in ways that enhance learning and understanding in an enjoyable way.
This instructor kept us engaged for the most part but sometimes talks over the students when the student is trying to speak their opinion or thoughts. But overall, I enjoyed being in the class.
This instructor is very knowledgeable about what she teaches and I can tell that she is very passionate about it. However, I wish she would be more open to discussions about other points of views. Even though she says that she's always open to discussion about anything, it sometimes feels like students are put down when they have anything related to an opposing viewpoint or question why something is the way it is.
She was very uplifting and understanding as a instructor in general. You can tell she was passonate when she teaches this content and wants us to do our best and get the best work out of us possible.
The classwork is good, the work and readings is good, the quality of the class I believe is good. It teaches LGBT history and new topics some people may not have heard. I think the only problem is the professor being close minded and a little disrespectful when commenting on student's responses.
Professor Compoc is really engaging and enthusiastic. Her conversations and lectures are extremely interesting. She is also really nice and understanding!
The professor was very thorough and educated. She is an amazing teacher who teaches with passion. Just seeing the passion that the professor feels towards the subject is very encouraging and I could tell that the professor has a lot invested in this course. Sometimes she's a bit too bias but I can understand that given the course material and the history that is being taught. I hope that this course continues to be taught at UHWO, it is essential for students to understand histories that are often pushed to the side and ignored.
I did not agree with much of what was discussed or how some students were corrected in front of the course. I also noticed when students disagreed with the subject asked to discuss, they were stopped and told they didn't understand the material when they were simply disagreeing with it. I was in small group the week after and one of the students was frustrated she never had a chance to express her view on the topic, that the professor just cut her off. Anoterh student was openly corrected in class and told what was written in her post was homophobic when really there wasn't anything wrong with her expressing her view and opinion. It makes the students like us feel uncomfortable and less likely to be open to discussions. Professor expressed much desire for openness but shuts us down at any hint of disagreeing. Being told our speech is homophobic or thought is when it clearly isn't meant I did not care for this course at all. Hopefully in future courses professor will be willing to listen to criticism and disagreement with subjects she is passionate on.
I think the instructor knows what she is talking about. She is very passionate, provided a lot of resources, and constantly encouraged us to use our voices. However, I do feel like she was very biased. Like I had stated earlier, she left little to no room for anyone to have an opposing opinion. A majority of the class had agreed during small groups, that we felt uncomfortable and were afraid to speak up during the main discussion. She made a lot us feel as if we are walking on eggshells. It's not so much that we were learning to be cautious, we were just afraid of being accused of sounding/being homophobic for having certain opinions. We were being respectful for the most part, we just didn't agree with everything that was said. Again, she has every right to feel the way she does. She wants to educate us on a community that was force to be silent, but, there were times I feel that she forgot that we (the students) have a right to an opinion as well.
3/10 if we're rating this instructor on a scale of 1-10.
