2.   My overall evaluation of this course is...
I really enjoyed having class discussions and hearing what others had to say about certain topics. I was interested in hearing everyone's ideas, even if they were different from mine.
The course was fascinating. I learned a lot of things surrounding queer history in pop culture that I wouldn't have learned from just consuming media alone.
A very good course that helps students get a better understanding of cultures and impacts of mass media.
Very thorough in discussing matters brought up in the texts, but it felt more like a LGBTQ studies class than a pop culture class. I learned a lot, but it's not exactly the class I signed up for. I wish they had correctly advertised it as "pop culture through LGBTQ lens" during registration. I feel a bit underprepared for my industry as I was hoping to learn about the history of media and this class left out a large portion of popular, mass, and counter culture.
Really interesting and engaging.
Awesome, fun, and knowledgeable.
Great!
It was a good course and I learned a lot of interesting things I never knew before. I think it has also given me a much better understanding of the LGBTQIA community and how pop culture helps and hurts this community.
It was very interesting to learn more about LGBTQ history and their work. With the ongoing fight for rights, I never really understood anything about the hardships that they have had to endure. It makes my support for them much stronger. I think it's great that we are resurfacing their history and putting them in a more positive outlook.
One of the best classes I have ever taken! Lots of awesome discussions & topics that we learned about in this course.
We need more courses like this in school. To keep students engaged and learning in an interesting and safe environment. I enjoyed this course. Professor Compoc is living and going places where teachers are usually hesitant to go! Such a RISK taker and so Brave. I am glad UHWO allows these kinds of topics to be experienced and taught. I have learned so much about things that were not talked about or just thrown under the rug.
It was great and one of my favorite courses I ever had.
Important subject matter for a class
This class is needed and good to represented at this time.
Not what I expected. I went into this class kind of blind and not really knowing what to expect. But ultimately it was positive as I really enjoyed alot of our discussions and felt at times the class was more about discussion and interactions with one another over a lecture style class.
Amazing content, delivery needs improvement. No one talked in the class, and I don't think its entirely on us. The class is over 2 hours long. We have the time to have discussions amongst each other, but instead, most of the class we are either 1) Listening to these long and boring presentations of the things we just took a quiz on, and had to read on our own time... then 2) we have to go into small groups and talk about 2 questions that laulima already gives us the right answer to. Its repetitive, boring, and not engaging at all. Which is tragic because the content is amazing and juicy stuff.

3.   If this course was taken to fulfill course requirements for your concentration/major, how did this course enhance your personal and/or professional development in your concentration/major?
I feel like I am able to apply what I learned in regards to social, political, and cultural injustices to the development of my personal views on those injustices and activism.
It encouraged me to be more critical of the books, articles, and films we read, since we were required to reflect on the text, what worked and didn't work. It also encouraged us to be more bold in integrating indigenous voices and depicting social issues in our own work.
This was an elective however this course gave a better understanding of people, which changed me as a person.
It gave me a broader understanding of representation and the importance of what media you serve to the audience, how it shapes our culture.
It taught me information about real life in an engaging way.
As a creative media student, I believe it will help me better understand the pop culture of America, which has a huge impact on creative media.
Learned lots of history that gets sidelined
This course gave me a better sense of what kind of choices I should make as a person who is creating characters and writing stories. I see how important representation is and how it is important to be sensitive and knowledgeable about the different kinds of people I may choose to write about. You have to learn from the people with whom you are writing about and make sure you get it right. There are a lot of hurtful tropes that I would like to avoid that I have seen in the films and text that were assigned for this class. I will take what I learned from this class and use it to the best of my ability.
To never judge a book by it's cover is a quote that strongly enforced during this class. People are people and as a media student, to pay closer attention to those I am portraying since media loves to portray stereotypical characters.
This course has definitely opened my mind to different perspectives and also taught me a lot about real-world situations that I can apply towards the creations I make in the field of creative media.
This class is for my major... And yes it will impact my professional development because it will make me address everyone. I will be more sensitive to issues of culture, race, gender, identity etc.... i am more aware of issues I never thought would impact me personally. But because it does not impact me personally does NOT mean it is not important. I will try on my part to bring awareness to others and try to change the views.
Greatly enhanced development for my concentration.
understanding on how to handle LGBTQ representation in future media projects
Gives me a hindsight of history that is untold in most of education or literature.
Yes it was and as a education major I felt that I learned a lot in this class and try too look at things through a different lense as best as possible.
No, it is not required, but it gave me a perspective I was never aware of and am not excited to call out these instances seeing it and now understanding the historical significance.
More insight on pop culture and history and how the media impacts and is impacted by this.

6.   Please comment on the activities or resources that could be added to this course to improve your learning.
- I think a few creative/hands-on activities would benefit students who just need a little more help understanding certain concepts
No comment.
I can't think of anything that needs to be added, however I was glad that we did not cover the film "Boys Don't Cry". It is a very traumatic film. I think maybe we could have covered something about Matthew Shepard and happened to him and how his death impacted American laws.
Please don't add anything else, it's already a lot to take in!
I think everything is great.

The only resource that might be worth adding is readings/film about cartoons since we didn't touch on them that much.
More films? I think that really helped me understand the themes better and it's a lot more fun.

I think Professor Compoc did a great job with her connections and with the information that we had for this class.
A paper where we have to analyze a piece of media (like a show, movie, or videogame) of our own choosing through queer theory would be a great way to test out the skills we learned.
Study guides on readings
None as the class is interactive despite COVID-19 being a factor.
This class had so much great resources I could never suggest changing nor adding anything to it.
Make engaging activities... make us make engaging activities. Again, we talk about the same three things in class. The same reading in 3 different ways. Seriously Professor.
Less material to absorb each week. Didn't like having to turn my camera on, made my anxiety much worse causing me to stop focusing on the material during class.

17.   Please list your suggestions for improving the course and/or the instructor's teaching style and methods.
- just adding a few more creative activities with the discussions
I wish we had time to discuss and reflect on the texts as a group before the quiz, even just briefly addressing questions or areas that were confusing. Just taking a quiz right at the beginning of the class doesn't help us in assessing our understanding of the text. Some of the questions on the quizzes were also quite vague.
The only suggestion I have is some discussion about Matthew Shepard would have been informative for some students.
If you could organize the texts so that they are easier to navigate, that would be beneficial. Like making folders in the Resources tab say "Week 1," or "Text 2" so that we can navigate them by assignment.
I think it's great.
Extended time for midterm
Updating schedule and what to review for next lesson.
I don't really think the course or the instructor's teaching style needs to be improved so I don't have any suggestions.
Nothing really to comment, I thought it was good especially as a zoom class.
N/A
no suggestions... this is hard course to teach... you need the right person to teach it and Professor Compoc is a great teacher to teach this course.
The resources tab for the class was a bit confusing at times. Especially when the format of the text is odd and we don't know which pages to read.
Place less importance on weekly quizzes
None as the instructor is straightforward with the schedule and is capable of getting everything or as much in each session without being overwhelming.
please dont keep doing the same thing. Maybe in person this works, but it didnt transfer online well.

18.   My overall evaluation of this instructor is....
She believed that as students, we all had the right to share what we felt needed to be shared without the fear of judgment from classmates. I really liked that she was real with us, and we were allowed to be real with her, too.
She is very passionate about the subject matter. It was fun learning from her. Would recommend this class.
I appreciated how the instructor really stressed importance of points and guided us to make conclusions. It was very effective for my learning.
Very knowledgeable and passionate about the course material. Has a well-structured class that makes you pay attention.
10/10, very personable and easy to talk with. Keeps the class engaged.
Awesome
Great, loved the class!
She is a great instructor who is very accommodating and taught me a lot. I also felt she had a lot to add during our class sessions and I enjoyed listening to her thoughts on the subject matter.
You are very uplifting and fun to listen to. I love how you address the current news during our class and connect it to our agenda.
EXCELLENT! The professor helped create such a welcoming & safe environment for our class to feel comfortable speaking up in. I learned so much from her and I am very grateful for it.
She is a great teacher for this course. I would not change it. She kept us engaged for the whole 3 hours every week and those who needed more help.
Great! Was very enthusiastic, she was able to keep the class enjoyable and educational
Teacher is very enthusiastic about subject
Great teacher! Would suggest anyone else to take the class or classes they offer.
Youre still an amazing teacher and it was great stuff we went over, but I hate for this to be the reason students dont like your class, especially because of how important I do think the material is
