Southwest China, a region of topographic, climatic and human diversity, is home to 31 of China's 56 ethnic groups. With over 500 of the finest and historically significant objects on loan from Taiwan-based collector, Huang Ying-feng, Writing with Thread celebrates the diverse and splendidly woven and embroidered handicrafts of these peoples.
Writing with Thread will provide an arresting visual feast of exquisite and rare costumes produced by 16 ethnic groups and nearly 100 subgroups. Included are the Miao, Yi, Dong, Tujia, Shui, Li, Zhuang, Dai, Buyi, Yao, Wa, and Zang. The exhibition will explore the meanings associated with the production and use of ethnic clothing.
