Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility by Kapi‘olani CC

The Fundamentals of Digital Accessibility is an online, self-paced professional development course developed by Kapi‘olani CC instructional designers for all UH employees. It serves as a low-pressure, self-paced learning resource with the option to complete a competency assessment to earn a digital credential. Participants learn important fundamental concepts of accessibility and how to apply their new knowledge to their own digital learning content (including Laulima-based content). There is more information available in this promo video. To register for the online, self-paced program, individuals should complete the Digital Accessibility Training Registration form.

LinkedIn Learning

LinkedIn Learning, is an online learning platform compromised of videos. To get started with LinkedIn Learning, Full-Time Faculty and Staff will first need to request a LinkedIn Learning account with the ITS Site License Office.

After obtaining a LinkedIn Learning account, click on any of the links below and Sign In. The Sign In field is located on the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Siteimprove is a WCAG 2.2 compliancy optimization platform. As a Siteimprove account holder, UH Faculty and Staff have access to Siteimprove Frontier (formerly Siteimprove Academy).

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Section 508 Training

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) provides free online training resources to assist with creating, validating, and remediating accessible electronic content that conforms to the Section 508 standards. This training includes a “Trusted Tester Training Track” where you can learn about Section 508 Standards applicable to the web, how to install and use web accessibility test tools, and how to test websites and web application for Section 508 compliance. Completion of the track grants a Trusted Tester certification that is recognized by DHS.

You can learn more about the training provided by DHS by visiting the DHS Section 508 training website and can enroll in the “Trusted Test Training Track” through the DHS Training self-enrollment portal.

Universal Design Learning (UDL)

Multiple Means of Student Engagement through Universal Design Learning (UDL)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a commonly used “framework to improve and optimize teaching and learning for all people based on scientific insights into how humans learn” (UDL, 2020). Instructors can embrace more effective and accessible course design for all learners by incorporating UDL guidelines.

Faculty presenters from across the UH system share their ideas and tips on creating an engaging learning environment and incorporating learning activities that align well with accessibility guidelines.

Poet Training Tool

The Poet Training Tool is a web based image description resource that helps people learn when and how to describe various types of images frequently found in educational books. Users of this tool have access to best practice guidelines and hands-on exercises that help cultivate skills for writing effective image descriptions for critical visual content.
