Sample 1098T Form

All students who attended a University of Hawaii campus during the 2002 calendar year and paid qualified tuition and related expenses will receive this form. Forms will be mailed by the end of January 2003. This form will help to determine whether you, or the person who may claim you as a dependent, may claim an income tax credit for the new Hope Scholarship or Lifetime Learning credits. Please read this page carefully as it explains the information reported on the form.

Boxes 1 & 2: At this time, the University is NOT required to provide additional information in these boxes. Therefore, for all University of Hawai‘i students these boxes will be blank.

Box 3: Shows whether you are carrying at least one-half the normal full-time work load for your course of study at UH. Half-time status is determined solely for undergraduate students based on: 6 credits during the fall or spring semester and 3 credits during summer terms. If this box is checked, it means you meet one (though not necessarily all) of the requirements for the Hope credit.

Box 4: Shows whether you are considered to be enrolled as a graduate student or enrolled in a program leading to a graduate degree, certificate, or other recognized graduate-level educational credential. If this box is checked, it means you are not eligible for the HOPE credit but you may qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit. Note: You do not have to be a half-time student to qualify for the Lifetime Learning Credit. Therefore, although you may be a graduate student enrolled at least half-time, if Box 4 is checked, Box 3 will NOT be checked because it was not necessary to determine half-time status for graduate students.

Important: For many UH students Box 3 and 4 will NOT be checked. In which case a student may wonder why the University is sending a form that contains only their name and social security number. There are several reasons: (1) The University is required to send a form to all students who were enrolled during 2002. (2) Unchecked boxes also provide information. For example, if Box 3 is NOT checked it means the student does not qualify for the HOPE credit. (3) It means the student attended the University during 2002, paid qualified tuition and related expenses and MAY still qualify for the Lifetime Learning credit.
