Digital Video Collection Online
University of Hawaii at Manoa’s Sinclair Library offers digitized versions many of its older videos in the Hawaiian and Pacific collections. The digitized videos are available online.
Video formats have gone through many changes in the past few decades. Over time, the library has acquired filmstrips, U-Matic tapes, Beta tapes, laserdiscs, VHS tapes and now DVDs. Many of the tapes are deteriorating and the older formats are becoming obsolete.
Sinclair Library is reformatting as many of these older videos as possible. The library uses QuickTime to create compressed versions of the archival digital copies. Highlights of the video reformatting project include Keiki Hula and Hugh Gibb’s films on the Philippines.
