Resolution regarding the utilization of the new writing portion of the SAT and ACT exams for freshman admission criteria.
Whereas, the College Board's SAT and ACT Assessments are required by the University of Hawaii at Manoa; and
Whereas, both testing agencies are adding a writing section to their tests as an option beginning the 2004-2005 academic year for freshmen applicants for Fall 2006; and
Whereas, freshmen applicants for Fall 2006 and thereafter who choose to take the SAT and ACT will be submitting scores for the previously utilized sections; and
Whereas, writing is a critical skill in the classroom and the workplace; and
Whereas, the University of Hawaii at Manoa includes five writing intensive courses as part of its graduation requirements; and
Whereas, most peer and benchmark institutions have already chosen to include the writing tests in their admissions process; and
Whereas, the SAT or the ACT writing test will provide an additional measure of the academic preparedness of the applicants to Manoa; therefore
Be it resolved, that the Manoa Faculty Senate supports the utilization of the writing portion of the SAT and ACT tests among the criteria for admitting freshmen students.
