Communicate with the Senate

Sense of the Manoa Faculty Senate regarding the proposed name changes for the Community Colleges.

The Manoa Faculty Senate has discussed the System administration's proposal to change the names of the Community Colleges, the essence of which is to remove the designation "community."

The Senate does not object to and will not stand in the way of this change. We believe that our colleagues in the Community Colleges must take the lead in this decision.

The Senate agrees that it may be desirable, from a marketing point of view, to change the names as proposed. Our own investigations confirm the administration's assertion that the new nomenclature is not uncommon among institutions which offer associate degrees.

In our discussion, Senators expressed concerns about the potential costs of this change, no estimate of which has been made available to us. Some Senators question the emphasis being given to names, when far more pressing matters confront us.
