Whereas the Lyon Arboretum is currently an independent research unit reporting directly to the Office of the Chancellor, University of Hawaii at Manoa, and
Whereas the mission of the Arboretum is to coordinate, facilitate, and execute research, instruction, and service activities that utilize its collections and resources, and
Whereas the Arboretum has strong, nationally recognized programs in the preservation of genetic diversity of Hawaii's vascular flora, the conservation of endangered plants and the education of the people of Hawaii in conservation of Hawaii's natural heritage, and
Whereas, the proposed transfer of the Arboretum has the endorsement of the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences and of the Director of the Arboretum, and
Whereas, no additional support is proposed for this transfer, and
Whereas the Arboretum requires a home within an academic college to enhance its research and education missions, and
Whereas the majority of the use of the Arboretum is by departments in the College of Natural Sciences while it continues to maintain strong linkages with the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, and the Pacific Biomedical Research Center, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED that the Faculty Senate of the University of Hawaii at Manoa recommends that the proposal to transfer the Lyon Arboretum from the Office of the Chancellor to the College of Natural Sciences be approved.
