RESOLUTION FROM THE COMMITTEE ON STUDENT AFFAIRS REGARDING NEW STUDENT ORIENTATION

WHEREAS, all new undergraduate students, including freshmen, transfer, and international students, enrolling at the University of Hawaii at Manoa should have the opportunity for academic advising before registering for their initial semester of coursework, and

WHEREAS, new students who do not attend New Student Orientation may not have academic advising before registering for coursework, and

WHEREAS, new students may not attend New Student Orientation because of the costs of registration, lodging, and travel, or because they do not perceive its importance, and

WHEREAS, new students may be delayed in completing their program of study because they did not understand program requirements and, thus, did not take required coursework in a timely sequence, and

WHEREAS, approximately 68% of freshmen and 25% of transfer students now participate in New Student Orientation,

Therefore, be it RESOLVED that the Office of Student Affairs actively encourage all new undergraduate students, including freshmen, transfer, and international students, to attend New Student Orientation for academic advising before registering for their initial semester of coursework at UH Manoa with a long-term goal toward 100% participation, and that the Office of Student Affairs be funded to offer New Student Orientation at minimal or no cost to students.
