RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE CHANCELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII AT MANOA

Whereas, The University of Hawaii at Mānoa’s accreditation (like that of any university) depends on the integrity of its autonomy, a critical component of which is the administration’s decision-making authority; and

Whereas, The University of Hawaii at Mānoa Faculty Senate in 2010 adopted with a vote of 35 in support and 2 opposed the Resolution Concerning the Process for Selecting a Director for the Cancer Research Center of Hawaii, which raised grave questions about the hiring process and whether the minimum qualifications were met by the current incumbent; and

Whereas, The Chancellor has investigated a considerable number of faculty grievances and complaints regarding the leadership of the UH Cancer Center and has determined that action was appropriate; and

Whereas, The Chancellor appears to have been prevented from exercising his appropriate line authority; therefore, be it

Resolved, That the University of Hawaii at Mānoa Faculty Senate decries any interference in the exercise of the Chancellor’s authority.
