RESOLUTION RELATING TO THE CTAHR MAGOON RESEARCH AND TEACHING FACILITY
WHEREAS:
The Magoon Research and Teaching Facility (MRTF) located at 2717 Woodlawn Drive has been operating within the UH Manoa College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources for over 40 years; AND
WHEREAS:
CTAHR’s research conducted at the Magoon Facility on fruit, flower and biofuels breeding, floriculture, bioremediation, crop protection, aquaponics, sustainable fruit and vegetable production, and animal sciences supports Hawai’i’s agricultural businesses, which contribute millions of dollars to Hawai’i’s economy; AND
WHEREAS:
The close proximity of the Magoon Facility to the Manoa campus allows it to serve as an important field site for both graduate and undergraduate student research projects and enriches the learning experiences of students enrolled in 24 CTAHR courses AND;
WHEREAS:
The UH administration expended more than $4.2 million to renovate and upgrade buildings and greenhouses on the Magoon Facility during the period of 2005 to 2008 AND;
WHEREAS:
The UH administration identified the Magoon Research and Teaching Facility as one of two potential sites for the expansion of faculty housing, AND;
WHEREAS:
The CTAHR Faculty Senate on February 17, 2012 passed a unanimous resolution requesting that the UH- Manoa administration remove the Magoon site from consideration for faculty housing and requested that the Manoa Faculty Senate adopt a similar resolution.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED:
The Manoa Faculty Senate requests that the UH Manoa Administration remove CTAHR’s Magoon Research and Teaching Facility from consideration as a site for faculty housing or for other purposes.
