A Resolution on a Recommendation to the University of Hawai‘i Board of Regents on the Composition of the Presidential Search Committee


Whereas:
1. The current President of the University of Hawai‘i system has announced his intention to step down in 2009; and

Whereas:
2. The University of Hawai‘i community of stakeholders is acutely aware of the importance of selecting the right person as the next president, and the possible repercussions of selecting the wrong person; and

Whereas:
3. Involvement of all sectors of the University of Hawai‘i community in the Presidential selection process will enhance broad acceptance of the new President's leadership; and

Whereas:
4. Recent Presidential searches by our peer and benchmark institutions have typically included a substantial representation by faculty on the search committees;

Therefore Be it resolved that the UH-Manoa Faculty Senate recommends to the Board of Regents that the University should

  • 1) Establish a procedure for searching for the next President that is consistent with established best practice for such a search, such as what is outlined in the AAUP's Presidential Search Committee Checklist (see attached document); and
  • 2) Include a substantial representation from the Faculty of the University of Hawai‘i on the Presidential Search Committee; and
  • 3) Begin immediately to initiate the search process. § Examples include: U. Colorado, 2008, 4 faculty out of 15 SC members; U. Iowa, 2007, 8 faculty out of 13 SC members; U. Arizona, 2006, 7 faculty out of 30 SC members; U. Illinois, 2004, 8 faculty out of 19 SC members; U. Michigan, 2001, 7 faculty out of 15 SC members;.
