Motion to Change the General Education Wild Card Option a Focus Exemption

The current policy states: “The ‘Wild Card’ Option. Through engagement in an extraordinary educational experience approved by the UHM General Education Committee each student can earn one wild card. The wild card can be used to satisfy an appropriate Diversification or Focus requirement.”
[UH Mānoa General Education Requirements, p. 3] http://www.hawaii.edu/gened/gened_plan2002-01-23.pdf

The General Education Committee (GEC) recommends revising the current policy to state: “Focus Exemption. Through engagement in an extraordinary educational experience approved by the UHM General Education Committee, each student may apply for and may receive an exemption from one appropriate Focus requirement.”

Since the Wild Card option was first introduced, no waivers have been granted for Diversification requirements. In addition, because students have over a thousand classes to select from every semester to fulfill their Diversification requirements, this option appears unnecessary. Therefore, the committee recommends that the exemption be limited to Focus requirements only. The name change from Wild Card to Focus Exemption is recommended not only to more accurately reflect this change, but to also eliminate the confusion that arises when students assume that a wild card can be used as a substitution for any requirement.
