Motions to Approve Changes in General Education Requirement by Revoking the Foundations Global Multicultural Perspectives "Exclusionary Rule"
The current policy states: “Diversification courses must be taken in departments different from those courses used to satisfy the Foundations Global and Multicultural Perspectives requirement.” [UH Mānoa General Education Requirements, Adopted December 8, 1999, p. 2, item 2] http://www.hawaii.edu/gened/gened_plan2002-01-23.pdf
There are no parallel rules for the other Foundations requirements. The General Education Committee (GEC) has found that the Foundations Global and Multicultural Perspectives exclusionary rule is difficult for students to comprehend, may be causing students to take extra courses thus extending their time towards graduation, and is problematic in that there is no pedagogical rationale for the rule. Therefore, the GEC recommends that this sentence be deleted.
