Graduate Application Checklist

Applying to the Graduate program of Theatre and Dance is a two-step process, involving you to send a set of materials to the UH Graduate Division Office and another set of materials directly to the Department of Theatre and Dance (all PDF's are form fillable.)

Step 1.
Materials to send to the University of Hawai'i's Graduate Division Office:

• Graduate Admissions Application Forms
  
• Application Fee
  
• Official GRE Scores
• Official Transcripts
  
• Official TOEFL Scores (for international applicants)
• Financial Information Form (for international applicants)

Step 2.
Materials to send to Graduate Chair - Department of Theatre and Dance:

• Theatre and Dance Graduate Express Form
  
• Graduate Assistantship (G.A.) Application Form (if applicable)
  
  • Descriptions of Graduate Assistantship Positions
• Statement of Objectives
  
• 3 letters of recommendation (All candidates in Theatre or Dance are required to send a total of three letters of recommendation attesting to qualifications and ability to do graduate level work; letters sent in support of applications for Graduate Assistantship or other financial aid may be counted toward this total.)
• Graduate Personal Evaluation Form
• Waivers of Access to Confidential Letters and Statements
• Tuition Waiver Application Form (if applicable)
• Any additional required materials (see below)

Additional Required Materials:

Theatre Applicants:

For MA plan A applicants:
A major paper.

For PhD applicants:
A major paper plus a dissertation proposal of 4-6 pages, with a partial bibliography and a proposed title.

For MFA Design emphasis candidates:
send portfolio or appropriate supplementary materials, such as slides, photographs, videos.

For MFA Playwriting emphasis candidates:
A one-act play or other script.

For MFA Acting emphasis candidates:
Include a VHS or DVD containing examples of your work. Two 2-minute monologues, one comedic and one serious; one from classical material and one from modern or contemporary plays. Plays from which monologues are chosen should be from well-known and established playwrights.

For MFA candidates in Youth Theatre, Asian Performance and Directing:
No special materials are required, but reviews, videos or other supplementary materials may be sent.

Dance Applicants:

For MA candidates:
A sample of written work, such as a major paper

For MFA candidates:
A video (VHS format) of your choreography and performance and a major paper.
