Thawte Certificate Program

ITS is now offering SGC SuperCerts and SSL Web Server Certificates for the University of Hawaii system under the Thawte SPKI Program. Any existing or new Thawte (pronounced="thought") certificates using the hawaii.edu domain name must be purchased through this account.

Thawte is one of the leading providers of trust services for electronic commerce and communication. By installing a digital certificate on your web server, it assures the customer that their information is being passed over a secure encrypted connection while verifying that the server itself is protected under Thawte's trust services.

These digital certificates work in conjunction with Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) technology, which is an industry-standard protocol for secure, Web-based communications. Some of the supported servers include: Apache Freeware, C2Net, IBM, Lotus, Netscape, Microsoft, OpenMarket.

Ordering Instructions:

1. Please complete the Thawte Customer Information Sheet - PDF Fillable Version
   (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader)

2. In order to participate in this site license program, we require a memo on your department's letterhead. The memo should include information contained in this example: sample memo.

NOTE: A Thawte Customer Information Sheet and Department Memo must accompany each order sent to ITS. If these two documents are not sent in with your payment, processing of your order will be delayed.

3. Payment: UH Requisitions / Interdept Order, RCUH Purchase Orders and UH Foundations PO/Reqs are accepted.
   
   • Tax and shipping fees are NOT needed.
     
   • Please use the address in Step #5 for the Vendor Address.
     
   • NO PERSONAL CHECKS, NO CASH, AND NO CREDIT CARDS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

4. Please list the type of certificate you wish to purchase (New or Renewal, 128-bit or 40-bit) along with the domain name that this will be issued for.

   EXAMPLE:
   Thawte 128-bit New SuperCert
   (For: sitename.hawaii.edu)

5. Send the completed Thawte Customer Info Sheet, Department Memo and Payment to the following address:

   University of Hawaii - ITS
   Attn: Site License Administrator
   2565 McCarthy Mall, Keller Hall 109

6. After ITS receives your order and processes your payment, the requisitioner will receive an email message confirming the purchase order number and items ordered. At this time, please generate your Certificate Signing Request (CSR) using the following example:

   Organization Name: Organizational unit: Country Code: State or Province: Locality: Common Name*

   University of Hawaii at Manoa YourDepartmentNameHere US Hawaii Honolulu yourdomainname.hawaii.edu

   NOTE: Please be sure to use "University of Hawaii at Manoa", even if you are at a different campus, enter US for Country, and spell out Hawaii for the State. Failure to do so will result with an error or cause delays in issuing your certificate.

7. Send the CSR in its entirety and provide the Web Server Software name (Apache, MS IIS 5.0, etc.) to sladmin@hawaii.edu.
