In the first lecture on April 9, Professors Cheng and Qian-yuan introduced fundamental concepts in Chinese aesthetics and philosophy.
Professor Chung-ying Cheng, University of Hawaii at Manoa, spoke on “Zhouyi as Origin, Source and Foundation of Chinese Aesthetics”. He was followed by Professor Zhang Qian-yuan, Jiangsu University, Visiting Colleague at UHM, who addressed “Five Types of Beauty in the Zhouyi”
Professor Cheng identified the aesthetic qualities in Chinese aesthetics in terms of the onto-cosmology of the great ultimate, the yin-yang, the four seasons, the eight natural forms, 64 images, and ten thousand of things, plus the ultimateless .
Professor Zhangintroduced five fundamental aesthetic features of Zhouyi: 1) Beauty of symmetry 2) Beauty of intercourse 3) Beauty of change 4) Beauty of birth and rebirth 5) Beauty of supernatural power
Zhang Qian-yuan received his Ph.D. from the Fine Arts College of Nanjing Arts Institute,is professor and dean of the Arts College of Jiangsu University, tutor for postgraduates and academic pacesetter in this field, member of China Artists Association, visiting research scholar of Philosophy Department of UH.
During the three years of 1994-1996, he held solo art exhibitions in Finland, Sweden, Turkey and Russia, and he lived in Turkey and Sweden. His monograph of Aesthetics on Five Element Colors of Ancient Chinese Painting was published by China Federation of Literary and Art Circles Press in 2003, and his second monograph of The theory of Images of Zhou Yi and Aesthetics of Chinese Painting and Calligraphy was published by China Bookstore Press in 2006. His second monograph won the third prize of the Tenth Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social Science of Jiangsu province in 2007.
