Tuition updates
The university has completed 7 of 10 campus public meetings on the proposed tuition schedule and will complete the last 3 and the HITS statewide transition by mid-October.
They meetings have been well attended and have generated some good discussion, which will be taken into account and will factor in to the administration’s final recommendation to the Board of Regents.
As part of the communications effort, President Greenwood, Chancellors Donald Straney and Gene Awakuni and Dean Maenette Benham appeared on the September 8 PBS Hawaii Insights program focusing entirely on the University of Hawaii and higher education.

Major grant for job training
The U.S. Department of Labor awarded the UH Community Colleges $24.6 million to partner with Hawaii businesses and state agencies in developing new training programs and support existinging ones to provide pathways that lead to jobs in the agriculture, energy and health industries.
In support of Hawaii initiatives to diversify its economy and improve its food and energy self-sufficiency, the multi-year grant will provide resources to integrate stronger online and technology components into curriculum development to help people complete their education and train for jobs that are needed in today’s highly competitive economy.
Funding comes from the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant, part of the $500 million first installment of a $2 billion, four-year grant program designed to increase opportunities for the unemployed.
More than 300 community colleges applied for these grants; the UH Community Colleges received the largest award out of of the 32 selected—a testimony to the cooperative spirit at the university and its partners around the state and recognition for the level of excellence in the community colleges and their leadership in building workforce and economic opportunities for Hawaii’s future.
