Budget update
The legislative session is in the home stretch. They have now moved into conference committee meetings. We will gain a better idea of how the budget will shape up over the next two weeks as the session is scheduled to come to a close on May 5. We are anticipating and preparing for a reduction and the impact that reduction will have on the university.
I’d like to commend our faculty, staff and administrators who are dealing with the harsh realities of this budget situation every day. They continue to do all they can to make sure our students’ needs are met despite these challenges, and it will take everyone working together to move the university forward.
As I’ve said before, we welcome any and all support from the UH community and everyone who believes that higher education is a critical investment in our future to help us survive these very difficult times.

Construction projects are moving forward
As part of my recent visit to West O‘ahu, I toured the construction site for the new campus and was extremely impressed by what I saw. The progress that has been made is amazing. You can really see how much potential there is as the campus comes up. It is very exciting and it will be even more exciting when we get to untie the maile lei at the dedication ceremony when the campus opens.
The UH Cancer Center project is also making great progress. The new facility is being designed to the highest building standards and will offer the most advanced research technology available. The project’s focus is to create an optimal work environment to support innovation and collaboration. The facility is projected to be LEED Silver.
Construction began on the project last October and the foundation was completed this month. Projected building completion is November 2012 and the projected opening of the facility is the first quarter of 2013. New architectural renderings will be available soon on the cancer center’s website. There are plans for the introduction of a new website in June that will showcase the construction of the new center.
