University of Hawaii Commuting Alternatives

Anticipate traffic delays on Monday, August 27, when more than 40,000 students from UH go back to classes. Given potential traffic problems, UH faculty, staff and students are encouraged to look at commuting alternatives. These include busing, car-pooling, bicycling and even walking to campus. Here are some options:


· The CityExpress! Bus route between the Kalihi bus terminal and Sinclair Circle has been extended to Waipahu. The connection will link University of Hawaiʻi at M_noa (UHM) on one end and Waipahu and Pearlridge Center on the other. CityExpress! Service will run from 4:20 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Buses will arrive every 10-15 minutes depending on regular or peak hours. Monthly bus passes and bus schedules are available at the UHM Campus Center Ticket and Information Desk (956-7235).

· Carpooling. About 300 car pool parking permits are available for purchase at UHM for half the price of regular parking permits. Carpools must include a minimum of two registered students each, with a vehicle registered in one of their names or a parent‘s name. Permits are valid only in Zone 20, and there must be at least two students in the car when entering campus. For more information, call UHM Parking Operations at 956-8899.

· UHM Parking Operations sponsors a regular shuttle campus wide on weekdays. Dormitory, Express, Campus Routes and Faculty Housing shuttle busses are available to all faculty, staff, students and visitors. There is no charge to ride any of the shuttle routes. Shuttles run from 7:00 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday during the fall and spring semesters. The parking office has expanded the campus shuttle to include a regular stop at the Japanese Cultural Center (JCC) parking structure, 2454 S. Beritania St. (across from the Star Supermarket). More than 400 covered parking stalls are available at JCC.
