The UH John A. Burns School of Medicine has received Accreditation with Commendation from the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) for its Continuing Medical Education Program. The program, Hawai’i Consortium for CME, is a joint venture between JABSOM and the Hawaiʻi Medical Association that began in 1994.

CME director Dr. Kalani Brady says this is the first time in its 22-year history that Hawai’i Consortium for CME has received Accreditation with Commendation.

The designation of Accreditation with Commendation, issued last month, is for a six-year period and commends JABSOM for meeting the ACCME’s accreditation requirements and for “demonstrating that yours is a learning organization and a change agent for physicians and patients you serve. You have demonstrated an engagement with your environment in support of physician learning and change that is a part of a system for quality improvement.”

Legislation mandates evidence of CME as a requirement for licensure in Hawai‘i and there is increasing benefit of CME for maintaining physician certification by national specialty boards. CME also serves as a vehicle for faculty development.

The Hawai’i Consortium for CME designates 30 to 35 activities annually. These include series such as Grand Rounds, Morbidity and Mortality Conferences and Journal Club in the Departments of Geriatric Medicine, Medicine, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, OB-GYN, Office of Medical Education, Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery; short courses offered by SimTiki; and joint activities in community partnership with physician and health-care organizations.

In addition, the consortium oversees certification for a variety of recurrent conferences such as the Hawaiʻi Addictions Conference, He Huliau (Native Hawaiian and Pacific Health Conference), West Hawaiʻi Cancer Symposium, Cross-Cultural Care Conference and the Hawaiʻi Workforce Summit by the medical school’s Area Health Education Center. CME is also a part of JABSOM’s annual “Reconnect” alumni reunion event.

The mission of the Hawai’i Consortium for CME is to support delivery of the highest quality of patient care by educating current health-care professionals and physician leaders in Hawai’i and the Asia-Pacific region.

The consortium believes that excellence and leadership in health care is accomplished through a continuum of medical education and to that end provides activities that are evidence-based, translational, in community partnerships and directed to improving the competence and performance of physicians and health of the community.
