From October 20 through October 27, 2014, learn about Open Access (OA) and explore changes in scholarly publishing and how they can affect the academic journey from student to early career researcher and beyond.

Open Access Week is an international event providing the global academic and research community the opportunity to learn about and share experiences with OA, with the aim of helping to make OA a new norm in scholarship and research. 2014 is the eighth year for Open Access Week and the fifth year of participation for UHM.

“Open Access” to information – the free, immediate, online access to the results of scholarly research, and the right to use and reuse those results as needed – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia, medicine, science, industry, and for society as a whole. OA has the potential to maximize research investments, increase the exposure and use of published research, facilitate the ability to conduct research across available literature, and enhance the overall advancement of scholarship.

Throughout the week, the UHM community is invited to learn about open educational resources at Outreach College, to navigate the impact of copyright on teaching and research, and how to contribute to Wikipedia.

The week will be capped with a guest speaker, Nick Shockey, who is Director of Programs and Engagement at SPARC (Scholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition).  He is also Director of the Right to Research Coalition, which represents local, national and international student organizations that advocate for researchers, universities and governments to adopt more open scholarly publishing practices. The coalition currently represents around 7 million students in approximately 100 countries around the world, including students at UHM.

All are welcome to attend Nick’s presentation on Monday, October 27, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. in ITS 105AB.
