Dr. Sharon Minichiello, associate professor of history and former director of the UH Mānoa Center for Japanese Studies, has been awarded the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa ʻOhana Award for Outstanding Service to Students.

The ʻOhana award recognizes outstanding service to students; leadership in fostering a campus community that supports intellectual growth, personal development and civic responsibility among students; and contribution to the professional attitude and morale of student service units.

Minichiello began teaching at UH in 1985 and three years later received the UH Board of Regents‘ Medal for Excellence in Teaching. In her capacity as director for the Center for Japanese Studies, Minichiello developed good relationships with donors, and found creative ways to raise and distribute funds to go toward program-building, student scholarships and fellowships. In addition, she consistently worked with various student groups and programs demonstrating her leadership and commitment to student service.

Minichiello will be recognized for her service to students along with other UH award winners at a system-wide ceremony in October.
